This 400-acre preserve is located on the Tuckahoe Creek and includes portions of the region’s most significant wetlands. Offers five miles of walks, education programs, art exhibits, lectures, special events, wedding rentals, workshops, garden tours, and native plant sales. Public amenities include a visitor’s center with gift shop, library, and meeting room. Many volunteer opportunities available. Nature preschool gives free tuition to families living in Caroline County through a community grant.Guided Nature Walks 1st Saturday of every month at 10:00am. Closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve through December 31.

Animal care and control, animal rescue and rehabilitation, enforcement of local animal welfare laws and prosecution of animal cruelty, animal adoption, humane education programs, promoting responsible pet ownership. Spay and neuter program for County residents. Acts as a resource for people finding injured wildlife, such as birds or other animals, who want to know about agencies that provide wildlife rehabilitation. We are always looking for volunteers. Volunteers 14 or older may volunteer without a guardian. 10-14 year olds may volunteer with adult supervision. All volunteers must go through our volunteer orientation which is 9am the second Saturday of the month.Eligibility: There are eligibility requirements for the spay/neuter program and also for adopting an animal. The Fraternal Order of Police holds fundraisers to benefit the community and donates the money to local organizations. They sponsor Little League teams, help with After Prom Parties, participate in holiday programs that benefit local families, and take on special projects based on community need. The group meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month on a bi-monthly basis at 6PM at private residences in Denton. There is a legal plan offered to sworn officers who are members.

Membership is open to all Caroline County residents. Applications can be requested from the President, or in writing.

On-site services include parenting education classes and support groups, nutrition classes, developmental screening and education, child care for infants and toddlers while attending center classes, GED, Adult Basic Education, and English as a Second Language classes (Mon.-Thurs. 9:30 AM-12:30 PM & 1-3 PM). A family advocate is assigned to each family to be a case manager and work on their individual needs. Off-site services include home visits by a case manager. The Parents As Teachers program is a family education and support program that includes home visits and group meetings at the center. Call the center for more information or to enroll in any of the programs. Volunteers accepted.

Eligibility

There are income requirements and a sliding scale fee. You must be either pregnant, or a parent of a child that is aged 3 or under. Program includes assisting fathers, as well as mothers of young children.

Character Counts Mid Shore, Inc, is a non-profit (501C3) community-based organization that works to espouse positive character development in every aspect of life. Non-political and non-religious, the organization’s mission is to provide and implement a citizen-driven character enrichment program to all citizens in Talbot Dorchester and Caroline Counties.Our message is based on the Six Pillars of Character – Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. CCMS has partnerships with the public schools in Talbot, Caroline and Dorchester Counties.Our program in the public schools is called Winners Walk Tall. Volunteers are recruited and trained to be Character Coaches that visit classrooms for 15 minutes every week with positive character messages, stories, and activities. CCMS also holds an annual Laws of Life Essay Contest for middle and high school students to write essays reflecting on their use of one or more of the Six Pillars of Character. Cash prizes are awarded in addition to a $2500 scholarship. Each year a graduating senior in each county is awarded a $1000 Citizenship scholarship. CCMS is NOT funded by the school systems or any form of government.

CCMS is available to meet with service clubs, business and education groups, and other organizations to provide information and resources to infuse a message of character into their projects.

Court Appointed Special Advocates are trained adult volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system. The CASA volunteer works with the child, his/her family, teachers, the social worker, and the attorney to ensure that a safe and permanent home is secured for the child in the shortest time possible.
